Jim Keohane: A penny for your z/OS!
Jobs and Woz, eat yer hearts out! Mainframers too can have their very
own, personal mainframe development environment in a garage for a
paltry $10K per annum!
Even better, a full blown 15 MIPS z/OS-loaded laptop for a measly $5K
a year! $440 a month! Under $15 a day. Just 60 cents an hour. Yes, a
penny a minute. I can see the annoying TV commercials now.

New
fronts open in database war
ALTHOUGH THE database market is clearly mature, e-commerce, content management,
and integrated business intelligence are causing many larger IT shops to more
closely examine their database platforms, which figure to be the driving forces
for those initiatives.
Oracle9i—Is
it more fluff than stuff?
Larry Ellison can lose a couple of billion on paper any bad day in the market
or come out the loser on a bad yet highly publicized bet, but the computer
industry is surely doomed if he ever stops believing in his company.
Is
Oracle's E-Biz Presence Overstated?
If you have been paying attention to Oracle Corp.'s {ORCL} hard-to-miss advertising
campaign, you probably figure that the software giant's leap into e-business
justifies its lofty valuation. After all, even the squirrels in Central Park
have by now heard Oracle's oft-stated claim to be the "worlds largest provider
of software for e-business," a boast that is supported by Oracle's many magazine
ads and roadside billboards, which flatly state that "96% of the Fortune e-50
run Oracle."
IBM
dismisses 9i as 'publicity stunt'
London - So Oracle wants to be taken seriously as an application server? According
to Paraic Sweeney, IBM's vice president of business transformation in the
application and integration middleware division, Oracle's 9i database and
application server software announcement in San Francisco last week was a
"pure-play publicity stunt."
Oracle8i
'Three-To-Five Times' More Expensive Than DB2
Database users should use Oracle Corp's "expensive" database pricing to haggle
for lower licensing or move to alternative platforms, according to analyst
Meta Group. Meta claims Oracle's recently introduced power unit pricing model
for the 8i makes it three to five times more expensive for an organization
to purchase this database than IBM Corp's DB2, which uses a per-processor
pricing model and was introduced in May last year.
